Newcastle United came from behind to beat Valencia 2-1 as Matthias Jaissle enjoyed a winning start in charge of the Magpies.

It proved to be an eventful night in Spain, with Yoane Wissa scoring twice in the second half to complete the Newcastle turnaround against a Valencia side reduced to 10 men.

There was also relief surrounding Anthony Elanga after the Newcastle winger was stretchered off following a horrible challenge from José Gayà. Early indications are positive, with Elanga up and walking after suffering a contusion to his shin, and the injury is not currently believed to be serious.

Wissa Double Turns It Around

Newcastle found themselves behind against Valencia, but Jaissle’s side responded impressively after the break.

Wissa proved to be the difference.

The Newcastle striker struck twice in the second half to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 victory and give his new head coach the perfect start.

For Jaissle, who has spoken about wanting Newcastle to play front-footed, aggressive and vertical football, the response after falling behind will surely have pleased him as much as the final result.

It’s only pre-season, but starting with a victory is never a bad thing.

Elanga Injury Update Provides Huge Relief

One of the biggest concerns of the night came when Elanga was stretchered from the pitch following a dreadful tackle from Gayà.

With the new Premier League season approaching, Newcastle supporters were understandably fearing the worst.

Thankfully, the initial update is encouraging.

Elanga is reportedly back on his feet and walking after suffering a shin contusion, with the injury not thought to be anything serious.

That could be just as important as the result for Jaissle.

Newcastle will obviously assess Elanga further, but the early signs appear positive.

Toure and Steur Make Their Mark

There were more encouraging signs from two of Newcastle’s new arrivals.

Bazoumana Toure and Sean Steur were introduced from the bench and both made an impact, providing another glimpse of the exciting young talent Newcastle have added to the squad.

Steur in particular is a player Newcastle supporters should keep an eye on.

He’s technically gifted, confident on the ball and doesn’t look afraid to get involved. This pre-season could prove hugely important for him as he attempts to force his way into Jaissle’s plans.

Toure also brought energy and directness after coming on.

These are young players, so expectations need to remain realistic, but the early signs are certainly promising.

A Positive First Night for Jaissle

There has been enormous change at Newcastle this summer, but this was exactly the type of start Jaissle would have wanted.

A victory.

A comeback.

Two goals for Wissa.

Encouraging performances from the new signings.

And, perhaps most importantly, what appears to be positive news regarding Elanga’s injury.

There is obviously plenty of work still to do before the competitive action begins, and nobody should read too much into one pre-season result.

However, after a turbulent summer on Tyneside, Newcastle supporters can certainly take some positives from this one.
