Yoane Wissa Is Showing Newcastle Why His Best Is Still to Come

Yoane Wissa is starting to show exactly why Newcastle United were so determined to bring him to St James’ Park — and the exciting thing is that we may still be nowhere near seeing the best of him.

The Newcastle striker was on the scoresheet again on international duty, netting for DR Congo in their 2-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea.

Wissa struck in the 72nd minute, turning inside the penalty area before finding the bottom corner to secure the three points for his country.

It continues what has been a very encouraging few months for the Newcastle number nine.

After a difficult first season on Tyneside, Wissa has started all five of Newcastle’s Premier League matches this campaign and has already contributed a goal and an assist.

Under Matthias Jaissle, he looks increasingly important to the way Newcastle attack.

His movement, work rate and ability to occupy defenders can create space for the players around him, while we already know from his time at Brentford that he is capable of scoring goals consistently when he finds his rhythm.

And that is perhaps the biggest reason for Newcastle supporters to be optimistic.

We still haven’t seen the best of Yoane Wissa.

Last season was disrupted and never really allowed him to build sustained momentum. This season already feels different. He is getting regular starts, looks sharper and appears to have the confidence of his manager.

Now he has taken that form onto the international stage.

For DR Congo, Wissa has again demonstrated that when chances arrive, he has the composure and quality to punish teams.

Newcastle have plenty of attacking talent, but having a confident Wissa leading the line could prove hugely important as the season develops.

There will undoubtedly be tougher periods ahead, but the early signs are encouraging.

If this is Wissa still working his way towards his best, Newcastle could have a very important player on their hands this season.

And the best of Yoane Wissa may still be to come.
