International Break Could Be Exactly What Matthias Jaissle Needs at Newcastle United

For many supporters, an international break is an unwanted interruption to the Premier League season. For Newcastle United and Matthias Jaissle, however, the timing could prove extremely useful.

Jaissle is still in the early stages of building his Newcastle side. There have already been encouraging signs, but it is also clear that this remains a team learning a new manager’s methods and adapting to a different way of playing.

Time to Work on the Jaissle System

Changing manager isn’t simply about changing the team sheet.

Jaissle wants his Newcastle side playing with intensity, aggression and purpose. That requires players to understand where they need to be both with and without the ball, when to press, when to drop and how quickly Newcastle should transition after winning possession.

Those ideas take time on the training ground.

During a busy Premier League schedule, much of the work between games is focused on recovery and preparation for the next opponent. This break gives Jaissle and his coaching staff a valuable opportunity to look at the bigger picture.

Of course, Newcastle will have players away representing their countries, so Jaissle won’t have every member of his squad available throughout the break.

But for those remaining at the training ground, this could be an important period.

A Chance to Fine-Tune Newcastle

This is where Jaissle can really start drilling his ideas into the squad.

Positioning, pressing triggers, movement in possession, defensive organisation and transitions can all be worked on without another Premier League fixture immediately around the corner.

It also gives the coaching staff time to work individually with players who may still be adjusting to what the manager wants from them.

Newcastle haven’t suddenly become the finished article under Jaissle, nor should anyone expect them to be.

A new manager, new tactical approach and changes within the squad were always going to require patience.

Newcastle Could Return Stronger

The international break could also give some injured players valuable recovery time.

Getting players back while giving Jaissle additional time to work on his tactical ideas could make a significant difference when Newcastle return to Premier League action.

The important thing will be whether supporters can see progression.

We want to see Newcastle become more comfortable in possession, more organised without the ball and increasingly confident playing the aggressive, front-footed football Jaissle wants.

This Is Still Just the Beginning

Perhaps that’s the biggest thing Newcastle supporters should remember.

We haven’t seen the finished Matthias Jaissle Newcastle United yet.

There have already been glimpses of what he wants, alongside performances where the team has looked like one still adapting to a completely different approach.

That’s understandable.

This international break gives Jaissle something every new manager needs — time on the training ground.

When Newcastle return to action, we’ll hopefully begin to see the next stage of his Newcastle side taking shape.

The foundations have been laid. Now Jaissle has an opportunity to build on them.
